Need for our program?

  • A 2007 City of Berkeley homeless census estimated that 1,000-2000 homeless residents in Berkeley, accounting for 20% of all homeless in Alameda county. Of those 1,000-2,000 half are thought to be chronically homeless.
  • We largely serve a male population, 13% of whom are U.S. Veteran’s. Public services have traditionally targeted women and children. So we serve a particular subset of the homeless population that have special needs which are not traditionally addressed by other programs.
  • Dorothy Day House is the only consistent breakfast program in Berkeley. Our breakfast program is open 6 days a week including holidays. Hunger does not take a vacation and neither do we.

Who funds us?

  • City of Berkeley provides 41% of our annual income
  • Pledges/Donors provide 34% of our annual income
  • Foundation Grants provide 25% of our annual income

How much goes directly to services?

  • We are very proud of the fact that a large percentage of our annual income goes directly to the community we serve. 85% of our approximately  $150,000 annual income directly funds the services we provide.
