About Us
Who We Are
Dorothy Day House (DDH) has its roots in the Berkeley Catholic Worker Community, but we are a multi-denomination, human services group, dedicated to feeding the less fortunate in our midst. We boast a fun environment, a good relationship with our clientele and we welcome volunteers of all beliefs and faiths.

What We Do
Free Breakfast Program
We serve a nutritious breakfast to as many as 200 people per day six mornings a week (Mon-Sat) in two shifts (5am-6:30am and 6:30am-9:30am) year around including holidays. All volunteer training is supervised by our experienced crew of volunteers, shift leaders and two part time staff members. New volunteers can easily master the job after just two shifts.
**Our greatest need for volunteers is for our breakfast program*
Free Emergency Storm Shelter
DDH hosts the Berkeley Emergency Storm Shelter (BESS) at the First Congregational Church between November and April on nights with harsh winter weather. A team of independent contractors and up to 4 volunteers host BESS each night that it is open.
